Sewing Projects in 2017

Torah Cover and Table Pad

Cantor Lisa Doob at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, MA asked if our quilting committee could make a colorful torah cover and table pad to be used when a full-size torah is used for a service outside the sanctuary.  I used the image of the tree of life and Hebrew lettering again to design this torah cover and the larger, less decorated table mat to match.  The background of both are pieced from many shades of blue and green cotton fabrics.  The tree and lettering are machine appliquéd.  I hand quilted a spiral of orange thread on the table mat and machine quilted around the appliqué, then added more circles in the background on the torah cover.  A ribbon stitched under the label on the table pad is used to tie the pad when both are rolled up for storage.  They were finished in April 2017.

Kaleidoscope Quilt

Ben's mother-in-law, Barbara Newman, helps raise funds for the "Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation" in Poughkeepsie, NY for the support of those effected by breast cancer in New York’s Hudson Valley.  This year's donation could be a baby quilt or a wall hanging. It's a pattern I've wanted to do with straight seams that imply curves.  I used pink fabrics left by my friend Carol Telsey.  At the silent auction at their spring luncheon it raised $150.

Crocodilly stuffed toys

Gabriel saw a stuffed crocodile toy when visiting his maternal grandparents.  Barbara said, "Maybe Bubi can make you one." So I found a pattern online, we named him "Crocodilly" after a children's hand clapping game, then made another for Ezra because everything needs to be made in twos at this age.

Elijah's doll and clothing

For Elijah's 2nd birthday, I proposed making him a sock monkey like I made for Gabriel and Ezra.  Jonathan wanted Elijah's gift to be a real doll, not a monkey, so I found a pattern that looked remarkably like Elijah.  I made him a cloth diaper with velcro tabs like Elijah wears and a sleep sack like he wears for his naps, then bought 2 toy baby bottles so he could feed his "baby".  For Chanukah, I added a pair of blue jeans and 2 Timberlock logo shirts which he's great at removing but needs Bubi's help to put back on.

Unfinished quilt for Leona Briggs

An elderly quilting friend, Leona Briggs, started to make herself a friendship quilt about 10 years ago.  She made 24 blocks, each from a different antique-style fabric, and had her friends and students sign them.  Now that she can't see well enough to finish the quilt, I did it for her this summer and returned it to her after showing it at the Concord Piecemakers show in October.  I like making a quilt and knowing the recipient will enjoy having it since I've run out of wall space in our house to display them.

Two twin bed quilts

Three-year-old Ezra's bed looks like a race car.  I thought a car quilt would be appropriate and I'd have time to make it twin bed size before he graduates from his crib mattress to a twin mattress.  In my local quilt shop, the owner told me about a set of printed panels with racing cars, train tracks, etc on them.  Northcott Connector Playmats includes a choice of all-over prints for the backs and stripes for the borders.  When I showed my idea to Ben he advised me to make one for Gabriel (6), too, even though he already has a Thomas train comforter on his  twin bed. So Gabe's quilt includes an airport, a town, and a harbor.  Ezra's has trains, a construction site, and a race track.
When I finished both quilts, I printed labels for the back on an old computer with an old dot matrix printer at the Quilt Museum library.  I cut the fabric in the shape of a car and drew details with a permanent fabric marker.
