New Year's Greetings from the Supnik Family

2005 has been a year of transitions and significant events for our family:
Bob's father died, Ben became engaged, Jon bought a house.

Bob says: My father passed away in October 2004, at age 92.  Over the last year, he had become more fragile, requiring partial and then full-time home health-care.  In September, Martha and I persuaded him to come to New Jersey, to be closer to the family.  Gale and Lee helped him fly north on September 23.  Over the next ten days, he saw most of his family -- children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children -- to say goodbye.  He died peacefully on October 4.
In other news, I've been working at a new startup, SiCortex, for more than a year.  The team is close to finishing its design work and is eagerly anticipating delivering the finished result next year.  My computer history simulator project continues to prosper and is now in its twelfth year.

Martha says Bob and I enjoyed a trip to Little Cayman in February where he swam with the fish and I made yet another small quilt. On the way back, we helped Bob's father celebrate his 92nd birthday in Florida.  He was still living independently, driving, shopping and cooking for himself.  It was too hot to climb any mountains this summer so we spent most of our vacation at Camp Timberlock in the water. In the fall, we flew up and back to Florida 3 times to care for Bob's father and then sell his house after he died.  In November we celebrated both kids being engaged and enjoyed meeting Lori's parents.

I’m grateful for the time I had with Mike in his last weeks.  We found that it’s fine to retire to Florida when you’re healthy, but when you start seeing doctors regularly, it’s time to move close to family so someone can coordinate your care.  After cleaning out his house to be sold, I now feel that we should all give away, throw away or donate anything we’re not using while we’re still young and strong and not leave that job for our heirs.  It has felt good to clear out some of my own closets and drawers and find things that have been hidden for years.  In the coming year I hope to do more genealogy and display more family photos that both our parents saved for years.  And I look forward to sewing wedding canopies for our kids' weddings.

Ben says: This year has been a year of life-cycle events; this fall Lori and I were engaged, and a few days ago Lori became an Aunt – Zachary Hastings Nedell was born December 29th.  Work has been busy too; shortly after Thanksgiving my company, Laminar Research, released X-Plane 8 global scenery, a massive 7 DVD enhancement to the flight simulator’s graphics.  The FAA also contacted me regarding eventual work (hopefully starting within the year) as an Air Traffic Controller in Washington, DC.

Jon says:  We're still living in Medford, Massachusetts.  Larissa is plowing through class work for her master's (and eventually PhD) in computer science at Tufts University.  I started working for Funkitron Inc. in February, and am happy to announce shipping Funkiball, my first game, a few weeks ago.  We're making  more serious plans for getting married, selecting place, person to officiate, food, and so forth, but haven't set a date yet.  We're in the process of buying our first home, also in Medford.  We haven't broken the news to our cats yet.  It's been a happy and productive year, and we wish the same to everyone for next year.
